What role does resistance band training play in Parkinson’s rehabilitation, what proportion of patients benefit, and how does it compare with weight training?

This is a “systems” question, and I am a systems man.

I’m Prakorb Panmanee, but on my YouTube channels and travel blog, I’m “Mr. Hotsia”. My first life was as a systems analyst for the Thai government1. I was trained to see the “code” behind the “program”—how one small bug, one single “error” in a line of code, can crash an entire complex system.

In all these lives, I’ve seen Parkinson’s.

It’s a “system crash” of the “hardware” (the body). The “user” (the mind) is “stuck” inside a “program” (a body) that has “buggy code” (tremors, stiffness, “freezing”).

In my 30 years of travel, I’ve seen “local wisdom” for “hardware maintenance.” I’ve seen the “functional strength” of a 70-year-old “Yai” (grandmother) in a Lao village, who still carries her “kratip” (rice basket) and walks up a hill every day. Her “maintenance program” is life.

But I’ve seen the “modern” crash. We “stagnate.” And when the “Parkinson’s bug” hits our “system,” we “stagnate” more. We become afraid of our “hardware” (our body).

As a systems analyst, I know this is a “fatal error.” A “stagnant” “system” always “crashes.”

We must “run a ‘maintenance program'” (exercise) to “de-bug” the “stagnation.”

But which “program” is “cleanest code”? This brings us to the “tools.”

Here is what my 30 years of “field observation” and my “systems analysis” have taught me.

🐛 H3 The “Bug” We Are Really “Fixing”

First, we must understand the “system error.” The “bug” (PD) steals your “hardware” (your muscles).

We must “re-install” this “program.” We must “patch” the “hardware” (the muscles).

The “proportion” is not “What % of all patients?” (That’s a “buggy” question).

The real “data” is: The proportion of patients who adhere to the “program” (the training) and benefit is extremely high.

The “data” is not a “maybe.” It is a fact.

The “Western” data proves “bands” are “smarter code.”

But my 30 years of observation in SEA “proves” the concept.

I’ve seen “resistance band” “local wisdom” my entire life.

  • I’ve seen a farmer in Vietnam carrying a “yoke” (a ‘đòn gánh’) with two heavy, swinging baskets.
  • That “yoke” (the bamboo pole) is elastic. It bends.
  • The baskets are “variable” (they swing).
  • He is “running” a “program” that “patches” his core, his balance, and his strength all at once.
  • That “yoke” is a “resistance band.”

The “local wisdom” knew “variable, functional” “patches” (like the yoke) were the “fix” for a “strong ‘hardware'” long before the “Western ‘lab'” “ran the data” on a “rubber band.”

The “resistance band” is just the modern, portable, “clean code” version of the “local wisdom” I’ve seen for 30 years.
